Owners try what they can to stop this behaviour, but it usually entails shouting or screaming, which
tends to excite the culprit even further, and the dog learns nothing. The good news is that this
behavior can actually be eliminated completely in a week or less. Remember to communicate at all
times that jumping up is not acceptable behavior. Try the following technique on your dog.
- As the animal starts to jump up on you, turn sideways
and either extend your leg or lean over, giving a "body
block" with your hip. Remember that your dog's goal
in jumping is to place her paws on you, so if she
never gets to do that, in effect, she's lost and you've
won.
- When your dog is down on the floor ( with all four
feet) immediately squat down and pat her. She will
soon learn that sitting quietly will get her the attention
she craves.
- One of the easiest commands to teach a dog is "sit".
Be patent and consistent with your jumping pup and
by the time she is an adult she should be sitting
sweetly for you.
